Update: WoW

"A new year. A new warcraft writer. I have to confess to never really reading the newsletter, browsing through from time to time to see if there were any important announcements, but never taking the time to appreciate the work that goes into putting it together.

So, this is my opportunity to share with the community what the wow division is up to. Fortunately we get regular front screen updates on new stuff. We all see the epic achievement of downing hard mode Mimiron and being given major butthurt by Agalon. After taking an extending break from gaming I missed out on a lot of these defining moments. But what this means is you don’t need me to reiterate these progression breakthroughs. I can tell you about the small stuff, the things that make us so awesome.

I look at my division (Dorus is my puppet) and I am warmed by what I see.
Progress. People getting on with it. New people joining and embracing our ways.

Over the past month we have been grinding through achievements and I think it has been pretty awesome. At Christmas we identified what was really important about this time of year. More gaming time! We cobbled together a band of eight similarly minded family-ignoring wow enthusiasts and set about taking Naxx by the balls and double achieving a dedicated few and undying run. Impossible I hear you cry! Well.. we failed. Dorus died. We had to settle for just the dedicated few achievement. I could have written a thousand words on the mixed emotions I felt on that evening, but...the Big D cow man redeemed himself in our eyes when we tried again two weeks later and .. now we merry few are “The Undying” – I should also note that we also did this with only 8 people, and no one died once in the whole run, not even on trash. I’ve never felt prouder of these special special people.

We have also been grinding The Nightfall each week, black drake anyone? Slowly but surely we are getting everyone one of these majestic flying mounts.

The other big achievements we tried was a 25 man Naxxramas run. Like the the 10 man one we decided to go Dedicated Few and Immortal (thank you Lola for posting this opportunity) You want to hear awesome news? You do right? You want to see 19 DS members running around with “The Immortal” title? We failed. But in true DS style of doing nothing in half measures we failed it big, we failed it with true dedication, we failed it in a way that kind of makes you proud, we failed after about 4 seconds. You know those films that are so bad that they have a cult following? Our Immortal run was one of those. We did get quite a few achievements though, so it certainly was not a wasted night. Far from it, we learn from our mistakes so we can improve for the future.

But anyway, as I wrap this article up I’m sure you want some kind of Jerry Springer-esque point right? Well, here is what I have observed from the warcraft division in the past month or so.

I’ve seen a guild I love being part of. I’ve seen us achieve great successes and great failures, I’ve seen other guilds torn apart by failures, but I see DS stand up after a stumble, brush itself off, and continue moving forward. Our great love of this game brought us together, but I love this game more because of the people I play it with.

People can take this all far too seriously. It’s a game, it is about having fun and taking equal enjoyment from what we do and who we do it with. So next time something doesn’t go your way, remember that there is always tomorrow. Congrats the person who succeeded, support your brethren who has failed, or as Jerry would say.. Until next time, take care of yourselves and each other."
