Review: Wii Sports Resort
On Friday morning, a nice package arrived in the post. Wii Sports Resort and Motion Plus had come like I had hoped. Unfortunately I had my very first driving lesson about half an hour after it arriving so I couldn't play it until after that. After my two hour driving lesson I ran back inside, plugged in my motion plus and put in the disc. Everyone who has a Wii will have played Wii Sports, and this is basically a bigger, much funner version of that. You start off in an aeroplane and you skydive down to Wuhu Island (where the resort is). Once you land there is a screen with all 12 sports on it and I will talk you through each one, giving a rating out of ten.
Basketball: There are two modes to this one, 3-Point Contest and 3-on-3 Game. In 3 point contest there are 25 balls that you can throw and the objective is to get as many in as possible (obviously). To throw the ball you lift the Wiimote up and then flick it forward as if you were actually throwing a basketball. I found this one rather fun and played it quite a lot. However, 3-on-3 Game isn't as good, the controls are a bit dodgy and it is really annoying to do anything on it. You don't use the nunchuck, they just move themselves when you dribble. If you could use the nunchuck to move it would work so much better.
Rating: 7/10.
Frisbee: Believe it or not, this one is actually very fun. It also has two modes. One of which is Frisbee Dog, you need to flick the wiimote as if throwing a frisbee, and if it lands in the right area the dog will catch it. There is a marker you aim for and the closer you get to that marker, the more points you get. It actually feels like you are throwing a frisbee. The other mode is Frisbee Golf. It uses the same courses as the golf. Except you throw a frisbee instead of hit a ball. Also rather than a hole there is a big glowing area you need to throw it through. Rather fun, but takes a bit of getting used to.
Rating: 8/10.
Golf And Bowling: They have taken the games from Wii Sports but made them a lot more sensitive considering it uses the motion plus. Golf is now very annoying to play. Remember how the ball would swerve off in an unwanted direction when you hit it too hard? Well now it is even worse, because you have to keep the wiimote completely straight as you swing, otherwise the same thing can happen even with a soft shot. I really couldn't get the hang of it so didn't play it for long. Bowling however, is much better. It is very easy to put spin on it but not so easy that you do it by accident. The other game modes are fun as well. Not only is there 10 pin bowling, but you can also play a 100 Pin Game. Which is very fun, but a bit harder as you can imagine. There is also spin control, where there are 10 pins and barriers in the way. You have to navigate the ball around them. I will split my rating into two, one for golf and one for bowling.
Golf Rating: 5/10. Bowling Rating: 8/10.
Table Tennis: Very fun game. With the motion plus you can put spin on the ball. There is also a second game mode where you have to return as many balls as possible to the server.
Rating: 9/10.
Swordplay: This game Is easily the best, and it has three game modes! To slice you swing the remote, and holding B will put you in a defensive stance where you can block incoming attacks. It is extremely fun, and the objective is to knock your opponent off the platform and into the water. There is also speed slice mode, in this objects are thrown with arrows on them, you have to slice them the way that the arrow is pointing. There is also showdown mode, in this a horde of Miis run at you with their swords and you have to take them all down. I have played duel the most, and I have to say it is also extremely fun with friends.
Rating: 9/10.
Archery: Another very fun game, you hold the Wiimote in one hand and the nunchuck in the other, to pull the string of your bow back you hold Z and pull the nunchuck back, then release Z to fire. The aim is to get as good a score as you can by hitting the targets. Also one of the better games.
Rating: 9/10.
Air Sports: There are three game modes to this. The first one is Skydive, which you play to actually arrive on the island. In my opinion it is rather pointless and boring. But the other modes make up for it. In Island Flyover you hold the Wiimote like a paper aeroplane and fly around the island, very relaxing and rather fun as well. Then there is dogfight, you control the plane in the same way as in Island Flyover except the aim now is to shoot down your opponent with your laser. I haven't actually got around to playing it yet because it is only two player, but it does sound fun.
Rating: 7/10.
Wakeboarding: You are pulled behind a boat on a board and you hold the Wiimote as if it were handlebars. Aim yourself over waves and then flick the Wiimote to do tricks, trying to get a high score. It is alright, but not one of the better games.
Rating: 6/10.
Power Cruising: If you liked Wave Race, you will find this fun. To steer you hold the wiimote and nunchuck facing you like handlebars, and then tilt them both in the direction you want to go. You have to navigate through floating rings and get to the finish.
Rating: 6/10.
Cycling and Canoeing: These are really pointless and extremely boring, not to mention hard to control. I'm not even going to waste time writing much about them.
Rating: 3/10.
So there is all the games, as you can see some of them are a lot more enjoyable than others. Another great thing about this game is that for each game mode of each sport there are different stamps to collect. Which are sort of challenges. Some are easy, and some will take a long time of playing it to be skilled enough to get. A disappointing thing for me is that you can't play online, because I would have loved to be able to duel people or play table tennis against people from around the world, but alas, I can't. Overall, very fun game, and on my first day of having it I played for around 9 hours.
Thanks for reading my review, and I hope it gave you a good idea about the game.
